HYANG TO GOL 향토골 KOREAN RESTAURANT

25th August 2008
165 Tanjong Pagar Road,
Level 2 Amara Hotel
Singapore 088539
Tel: 6220 7160
Ms Ae Ryung is getting us interested in Korean cuisine by pre-booking an authentic Korean dinner at the popular Hyang To Gol Korean Restaurant. This restaurant is located on the 2nd Level of Amara Hotel, a convenient venue chosen since it is easily accessible from the Tanjong Pagar MRT nearby.

We are going to have a taste of Korean cuisine with so much preparation work just like the most popular 2003 Korean series All Time Jewel in the Palace aka Dae Jang Geum, set in the 19th century Joseon dynasty and acted by pretty Lee Young Ae .

Hyang To Gol has made a bold impression for first time diners with it's grand entrance display of a large traditional Korean barrel drum, seemingly welcoming everyone just like the Malays do with their kompang. As we enter, the big dining hall was not smoky but a whiff of nice aroma of sizzling BBQ meats makes you drool and hurriedly take to your seat ready for the grand meal to be served. The sight of the assortment of sides dishes " pan chan" (반찬 ) makes one wonder of the amount of the preparation required to present a Korean meal.

We quickly muttered "chal moge sumnida", I will have a good meal and truly the waitresses who too can speak at least a smattering of Korean language began to line up the tables with small bowls of sides dishes from pickled dishes like kimchi to small pancakes as appetizers. The kimchi dish is akin to having chilli which is a must have condiment for the Malays and Chinese too. The rice "bab" (밥) was served in a metal bowl with a cover and your cutlery is metal chopstick and a long spoon.
However, I still prefer Ju Shin Jung (주신정 )Korean Charcoal Barbeque in West Coast. The galbi there is much tastier whilst the taste here is slightly milder and marinate was perhaps relatively not as sufficient.

Besides this, other dishes to complete the meal includes Tteokpoki, rice cake cooked with Korean chilli bean sauce and Samgeytang which is Chicken soup with Ginseng, the latter was rather bland lacking in the usual strong ginseng flavour. Of course, not to be missed is the Kimchi Jeon or kimchi pancake and this was well fried and crispy with the kimchi taste very appetising.

Overall we had a good and wonderful meal and finally, dessert arrived with a simple cut of watermelon and orange slice. However it was the Ginger Drink that sweetened the meal as this was very refreshing and for this ask for another serving. 여기요? and this was served again.

HYANG TO GOL

We ordered the Korean BBQ Beef and Galbi (beef short rib) and the raw meats served was then grilled over the table BBQ stove, helped by the waitress in waiting. Yes, 맛있었습니다 and the meat was tender, tasty and delicious and the way it was eaten is the meat is wrapped with a piece of lettuce and you add a raw garlic, green chilli, cucumber and carrot for that wholesome bite.

I was gone for a week, and seemed to have missed a few gems.

nice post, I'm currently all for Korean cuisine, an alternative to Japanese food.

sadly I think good Korean food's lacking in terms of choices, and number of restaurants. esp here in Ipoh. sigh ...
