I had my first taste of Tong Heng pastries tonight at our cellgroup at Sirat Road, to be exact, Char Shao Shou (Char Siew pastry).

Tong Heng Confectionery has been around since 1920 and with more than 80years of producing handmade pastries since the founder, Fong Chee Heng arrived in Singapore in the early 1900s, I am tasting a piece of history from the Qing dynasty or perfected pastry made good over the years of experience by the deft hands that delicately mould and baked these pastries.

The char siew is evenly spread and has a consistent nice flavour that blends with the pastry. The box of 6 at $1.20 each was finished in no time despite that we bought carrot cake and the host cooked very nice beehoon goreng.

Tong Heng (Prosperity of the Orient) should move to the forefront to market and sell Singapore homeflavour on the international scene just like Bengawan Solo such that all tourists should purchase a box back like the way we handcarry lao por ping (wife's cake) from Hong Kong. The world will then identify Tong Heng with Singapore or vice versa Singapore with Tong Heng ...sounds good.
